Interview with Micah Brakefield

Recently, we have been very fortunate to get an opportunity to speak with upcoming star of the MMA scene, Micah Brakefield. He is the former Battlefield Fight Leauge Amateur Middleweight Champion. Notable wins over Ryan Allen, Justin Lansing, Jer Kornelsen(2) and Nathan Swayze. Below are some his thoughts on bullying.

BCABI: Welcome Micah, thank you for taking your time to talk to me. And thank you for coming out to talk. [I have] just a couple of questions for you. First one is:
What should one do if they encounter a bully or bullying situation?

Micah: Well I grew up in a family of 4 boys so we had lots of bullying in the house going on. Boys always have bullying going on at school and stuff. Just different degrees I guess.

BCABI: If one let say, encounters a bullying situation at a school ground, what should one do?

Micah: I don’t know, I always use humour as my way out of things. Just joke things off and try to give away your reply to things and always turn it the other way.

BCABI: That’s a very diplomatic way of solving things!
Why do you think bullying occurs?

Micah: I think it’s a…pretty natural animalistic thing for a stronger thing to pick on a weaker thing… it kind of just happens in all things and it’s how you deal with it if you play the victim or you bounce back and be cool about it and try to give or take with it.

BCABI: What can one do to make one’s self more bullying resistant?

Micah: Like I said, just use humour and just try and play it off and smile. People don’t usually pick on someone who is smiling, they pick on someone who is down on themselves…and just happens…just like they want to get picked on pretty much.
BCABI: What are some of the good sources for help for bullying and bully type issues or where can one find help on these bullying issues?

Micah: I’m sure there’s lots of help-lines and websites, Google things, things like that.

BCABI: What can be done at the individual and public level to address the bullying problems do you think?

Micah: I think just bringing up light to it with social media like what you’re doing here with your survey and bringing awareness to it

BCABI: Alright, I know you have had a long day, so I won’t take too much of your time. If you want to talk Micah, how would he or she reach you? Through your facebook page or twitter? What would be the best way for someone to talk to you more about this?

Micah: On Twitter @micahbrakefield and facebook the same thing.
BCABI: Alternatively you can come to our webpage at BC Anti-Bullying Initiative to learn more about Micah and his contact information will be listed there.

Thanks for your time Micah and we hope to speak with you soon in the future!
Micah: Thank you and good luck with your stuff.
